The Whitehorse Art Show (formerly Box Hill Rotary Art Show) is one of a number of major fund raising projects undertaken by the Rotary Club of Box Hill Burwood.
In giving amateur and professional artists the opportunity to present their work in this important event, funds generated are utilised for the benefit of the community.
The Rotary Club of Box Hill was founded in 1957 with an inaugural membership of 31 men who started the club with the meetings being held at The Wattle Park Chalet.
The Rotary Club and its members have been at the forefront of many generous donations within the then City of Box Hill, and more latterly in the City of Whitehorse. Countless thousands of dollars have been expended to assist those people less fortunate than ourselves – and that is what Rotary Clubs are all about.
In 1965, the Rotary Club of Box Hill staged the first of their art shows, to provide an avenue for local artists to display and sell their work. From those humble beginnings an annual event was to emerge which saw 2019 stage the 55th Annual Art Show.
In 1989/90 the Rotary Club funded a community bus, which was donated to the then City of Box Hill for the transport of the elderly, and further donations were made to assist in the building of the St Johns Ambulance station, also in Box Hill. In 2007/08 a further donation of $100,000 was made by the Rotary Club to the Box Hill Hospital to fund much needed equipment.
The Rotary Club of Box Hill added Burwood to its area to become Rotary Club of Box Hill Burwood and is considered one of the pre-eminent Rotary Clubs in Rotary District 9810 within the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Since 1973, the club has provided 5 District Governors, with the fifth District Governor appointed during the 2015/16 Rotary year.
The Rotary Club currently enjoys a membership of 25 members – both men and women who are serving the needs of the community by their involvement with the Rotary Club of Box Hill Burwood and the projects they undertake – all for the benefit of those less fortunate than ourselves, and projects worthy of our support.
