ARTIST NOTES: Baining Fire Dancer is a piece that portrays a unique culture from the Baining area in the East New Britain province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). PNG is situated north of Australia (neighbour); a country culturally diverse with over 800+ different native languages which makes it the nation with highest number of languages in the world.
Among those 800+ different cultures are the Baining people. The Baining Fire Dance is one of many unique traditional dances practiced today by the people of Baining in PNG. This dance is performed only in the night and is very rarely seen anywhere accept in East New Britain. The dance is only performed by men and is usually done after weeks of preparations which are done secretly and is very sacred. During the event, huge fire is usually made and the dancers walk through the fire while it's red-hot. It is unbelievable but very real and this happens only once per year organised by the tourism bureau in PNG.
